MT Only, Coupe Only, N/A Only: How to Read the Restriction on an Intake Listing
Some Rtunes Racing listings end with a short restriction: MT Only, Coupe Only or N/A Only. These words carry as much fitment weight as the year and engine size. Skip them and you end up with a kit which will not bolt in, a return shipment and a car still running on the stock airbox. This guide explains each restriction and how you confirm your car before you order.
What "MT Only" Means
MT stands for manual transmission. An MT Only kit fits cars with a clutch pedal. It does not fit the automatic version of the same car, even when year, trim and engine match.
Our Cold Air Intake Kit for 2001-2005 Civic DX/LX/HX/EX/VP 1.7L MT Only (CI-HD-09, $79.99) carries this restriction. Honda sold these trims with both transmissions, so the trim name does not settle fitment.
Why the Transmission Changes Intake Fitment
On a front-drive car with a sideways-mounted engine, the transmission sits at one end of the engine bay. A cold air pipe often runs past this area on its way toward the fender. Manual and automatic gearboxes differ in case shape, mount position and the hardware bolted around them. An automatic adds fluid cooler lines and shift cable brackets. A manual adds clutch hydraulic lines.
A pipe bent to clear one layout runs into something on the other. The contact point differs by platform. The pipe will not seat. Or it rests against a line or bracket and rubs through it with engine vibration.
Some kits carry MT Only for a second reason. The car came only as a manual. The 2002-2006 Acura RSX Type-S and the 2002-2005 Civic Si hatchback both shipped with manual gearboxes only. Our RSI-AC-05BK short ram intake ($89.99) lists MT Only for this reason. The label warns owners of a base RSX, which offered an automatic and uses a different version of the 2.0L engine, against assuming the Type-S kit fits.
What "Coupe Only" and "N/A Only" Mean
Coupe Only. The 2001-2006 Dodge Stratus and 2001-2005 Chrysler Sebring came as coupes and sedans under the same names. The coupes shared a Mitsubishi platform and Mitsubishi engines with the Eclipse and Galant. The sedans used a Chrysler platform and Chrysler engines. Our RCI-MT-02BK-02 cold air intake ($109.99) fits the coupe only.
N/A Only. N/A means naturally aspirated, with no turbocharger. Our SI-MT-08 short ram intake for 2008-2014 Lancer 2.0L and 2.4L ($69.99) fits the non-turbo cars. The turbocharged Lancer Ralliart and Evolution use turbo inlet plumbing and a different airbox location, so this kit does not fit them.
How to Confirm Your Car Before You Order
- Count the pedals. Three pedals means manual. Two pedals means automatic.
- Treat CVT, dual-clutch and automated manual gearboxes as automatic for fitment unless the listing says otherwise. Paddle shifters do not make a car a manual.
- On some makes, Honda included, one VIN character encodes body style and transmission. A dealer parts counter decodes it in a minute.
- For Coupe Only listings, count the doors. Two doors on a Stratus or Sebring of these years points to the Mitsubishi-based coupe.
- For N/A Only listings, look for a turbo or a Ralliart or Evolution badge.
When the Checklist Does Not Hold
Swapped cars break the rules above. Automatic-to-manual conversions are common on older Hondas. The kit follows the transmission in the car today, not the one listed on the VIN or window sticker. Some swaps also change mounts and wiring routes, so test fit even the correct MT kit before you tighten it down.
Aftermarket parts change clearance too. A relocated battery or strut tower bar sits in space a kit expects to be empty. If your engine bay is not stock, send photos before you order.
Fitment Matters
A wrong kit costs you return shipping, days of downtime and possible damage if you force a pipe into place. A transmission or body style mismatch takes thirty seconds to rule out. Start at Shop by Vehicle, then read the full title of every listing before you add it to your cart. You find the full range in our Cold Air Intake Kits and Short Ram Air Intake Kits collections.
If you are unsure, check our FAQ or contact us at sales@rtunesracing.com or (626) 934-8888 with your year, make, model, engine, transmission and body style. Once your kit matches, use the installation guide step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions
My car has paddle shifters. Does an MT Only kit fit?
No. Paddle shifters on an automatic, CVT or dual-clutch gearbox still count as automatic for fitment. MT Only means a clutch pedal and a manual gearbox.
My Civic was swapped from automatic to manual. Which kit do I order?
Order by the transmission in the car now. Email engine bay photos to sales@rtunesracing.com first, since swap parts differ by build.
Should I bend or cut the pipe to make an MT kit fit my automatic?
We do not recommend it. Reshaping the pipe moves the MAF sensor and affects its readings. A modified part is also no longer in new condition, which complicates a return.
Does the Coupe Only kit fit a Stratus or Sebring sedan?
No. The sedan uses a different platform and engine family. Use Shop by Vehicle with your exact body style and engine.
